Motorpsycho´s capacity to cover radically different grounds has always been their core strenght and appeal. "Barleycorn"´s acoustic CSN-style harmonies evolve into a strikingly powerful climax. Scattered across stalking bass, lead guitars etch dark depths of loss and heartache before eventually climbing up towards the icy, ultimately redemptive light. As spine-tingling as this is, the real paydirt and album centrepiece is "Ratcatcher", Kapstad´s galloping drumming has a belligerent but intelligent urgency that adds to the frenetic twin-guitar momentum. Away from the incisive chorus, they dive headlong into an extended improvisation that conjures The Grateful Dead´s legendary extemporary sprawl. It´s a boldly inquisitive exchange of vivid moods, ideas and bar-rising challenges that flash and spark between Fiske and Ryan. Even when the track appears to formally close, a reflective coda surfaces. It´s as though they are reluctant to relinquish the reverie so carefully created over the preceding 17 minutes. Too ofte the word "epic" is used when what´s really meant is that the piece is just plain long. "Ratcatcher", however, is the real deal in every sense of the word.

Long-serving Scandinavians get heavy. You never quite know what to expect from a new Motorpsycho album, and the Norwegian rock outfit celebrate nearly 25 years by teaming up with Dungen guitarist Reine Fiske for an explosive, heavy record whose roots are largely in late 60s/early 70s British prog/acid/psych. "Hell, Part 1-3" opens with lumbering ferocity, while "Barleycorn (Let It Come/Let It Be)" grows from its acoustic intro to a Gentle Giant stomp. "Ratcatcher"´s 17 minutes yaw between Police-style vocal harmonies and pummelling free rock breakdowns. A sparkling cover of late Love track "August" is thrown in for good measure. 8/10.

"Still Life With Eggplant" returns the prolific Norwegian trio to their comfort zone of sounding like a three-way death-match showdown between Led Zeppeiln, King Crimson and Sonic Youth. It also features  Swedish psych-rocker Reine Fiske as guest guitarist, adding folky finger-picking delicacy to the "Wicker Man"-meets-Genesis ripeness of "Barleycorn" and the sun-dappled, jangly cover of Arthur Lee´s "August". If the album has a centrepiece, it´s "Ratcatcher", a monumental prog-jazz-metal-folk symphony that features surging vocal harmonies, acoustic noodling, super-heavy riffs and angry swellings, all punctuated by extended sections of desiccated post-Krautrock guitar-tweaking that approximate how Radiohead might sound after two weeks of drinking battery acid. Fantastic, epic weirdness.

"Still Life With Eggplant" blir kalt mye dumt i media, deriblant "hvileskjær" og "pusterom".
